The new BlackBerry Priv has been revealed in all its glory, with a UK retailer having announced the phone’s price, specifications and pre-order details. Accordingly, the company’s first ever Android device and hope for renewed popularity, will be made available for £579 or close to Rs 58000. It might cost almost the same as the cheapest iPhone 6S (Rs 62000) in India after taxes and all!
UK retailer Carphone Warehouse says the BlackBerry Priv will start shipping out to customers starting from November 6, and has begun accepting pre-orders for it. Its launch date for India is still unknown. Before this, a leak had suggested that the handset would be pegged at around Rs 41000, which could have translated to roughly Rs 45000 on these shores. It just goes to show, you shouldn’t put too much faith in rumors.
BlackBerry went big with the Priv (rhymes with ‘give’), stuffing it with high-end features in order for it to make an impressive entry into the market. Since it runs on the Android OS, the smartphone has the might of the Google Play Store on its side too. The small number of apps for its very own OS as compared to Android and iOS applications definitely hit the brand hard, as the company’s executives have been heard declaring in the past.
We’ve known for some time that the BlackBerry Priv would have a Qualcomm chip. This has been confirmed via the list of specs unveiled by the aforementioned online seller. A 1.8GHz hexa core Snapdragon 808 SoC is embedded at the heart of the device. Being a BlackBerry product, the physical QWERTY keyboard which is the trademark of its identity, has been included in the design. It’s a slide-out capacitive keypad that does double duty as a touchpad.
Another first arriving with the BlackBerry Priv is the curved screen. This panel is of 5.5 inches and spew visuals in 1440 x 2560p Quad HD resolution. Android Lollipop runs the show along with 3GB of RAM. While other major manufacturers have committed to beaming Marshmallow to their key offerings, the Canadian company is yet to make any such announcement. A host of privacy protections and the patented picture password login accompany the phone.
